Reading Diary: Sita Sings the Blues Part B Week 11
There is one of the Characters that commends Ravana for not touching Sita
Still even though he would not force himself on Sita he is looked at as being evil
Rama denies Sita
Monkeys standing on the heads of Ravana
I don’t recognize the gods in the animation
I think they are supposed to represent Sita praying to the gods in the trial by fire
The husband is again ignoring his wife she is headed to New York
I guess this could be a play on the exile of Sita
The return of Rama and Sita from Lanka at the end of the 14 years
Everyone is walking in the rain except Rama I think this is playing on how silly Rama actually is as a character
Looking at it from this movie’s point of view I can totally see Rama as a spoiled entitled brat
Old time movie intermission
Intermission is over this animation is humerous
Back to the States
Ok dave is telling Nina not to come back in an email now I know this the story of Rama and Sita
The animation and music has changed I think it is Sita dancing in the fire
Ok this song is the song of Sita in exile from Rama
They are making fun of how Sita got pregnant
Shows man beating a woman and saying that he is not like Rama
One of the characters thinks that Rama doubts that Sita is pure and that is a possibility to why he banished her
If that was true then it would raise all kind of other questions
This could be a Disney movie
Dave and Nina are back together?
It was just a dream
The cold outside and the inside of the apartment mirror the circumstances of Sita’s exile
All the animals seem to be in love while Sita is sad and crying and alone
The colors of the animation go along with the song title because they are blue
Sita have twins in the forest
The sons are taught songs of praise by Lanki
Nina calls Dave
The characters discuss the silliness of unconditional love because Sita is somewhat abused and should not be praying and begging for Rama back
Nina is reading the Ramayana
The movie ends
Still even though he would not force himself on Sita he is looked at as being evil

Reading Diary: Sita Sings the Blues Part A Week 11
The animation is simple but it works
The music seems extremely old
Title screen is a bit cheesy
Based on Valmiki’s Ramayana
Images of the god’s and there is rama on the bed of milk and serpents
Ok so these are all the gods and the characters from the story
Ok the mucis is much better now
SanFransico scene
Not sure what this has to do with the Ramayana
Three god figures discussing the Rama
Ayodhya
The characters compare the story to the bible as it being true
Laxman is Lakshmana????
Discussing the different names of sita
Explaining the story of Rama’s exile
This is a humerous approach
Animation of Rama being crowned
This seems like a very accurate albeit loose retelling of the Ramayana
Ok this is funny because they are telling the Ramayana but finding a way to incorporate the different versions that have been told over time. You know how each story puts it’s own spin on it.
Back to this old song
Ok they have taken a song and found a way to use it to tell the story of Sita following Rama into exile… So creative
Not sure what the Eyeball bats represent
Oh it is the story of Rama killing the rakshasa army in the forest
This is funny she is just singing and this plays out like a romantic dance
Ok the man is leaving for India
The story of Ravana
So Ravana is not evil but actually devoted to Shiva
He is a good king
Kink of sri lanka
Nasa images of the bridges
The movie is making fun of the lotus and how it is so big in the culture
Who is all this music from?
Using the song to confess Sita’s love and Loyalty to Rama
The background music fits well with the capturing of Sita by Ravana
They are kind of making fun of the fact that Sita left for exile without any jewelry and yet she is able to drop some for Rama to find her
The hunaman origin
Ok hunaman is incarnation of shiva….
How many incarnations of Shiva are in this story
Back to the couple in San Francisco
I think this is poking fun at the relationship between Rama and Sita and how they are never really together
Sita in Lanka
Surprised faced Ravana
This animation is so simple and cheesy yet it fits in with the story so perfectly
This song is being used to display sita missing Rama in Lanka and the animation works perfectly to tell the story
Hunaman is burning down Lanka
The characters poke fun at how easy it would have been to leave Lanka with Hanuman
Blood thirsty woman lol
The explanation of the difference between actual monkeys and the monkey army is good
Now the army is marching to Lanka the animation shows them walking on water and Rama knocking on the door
Where is this music from because it fits so perfectly with the sory
Old time batman tv series and comic book animation
Ravana’s heads flying over Sita as she sings
The couple reuniting is much like the reuniting of Rama and Sita
It’s cold and he wont come near her like Rama did to Sita
The music seems extremely old
Title screen is a bit cheesy
Based on Valmiki’s Ramayana

Reading Diary Part A Week 9
The story of Shiva’s son being beheaded and his head being thrown to the Himalayas
His head is replaced by and elephant head
This seems like an odd thing to have lying around the house an elephant head but ok
This story is narrated by one person telling the story to another person that is writing the story down on leaves.
Dharma in the first part, the king kills a snake and is cursed to be killed by a snake
The king tries to trick the serpent god but in the end the king is tricked by the god and is bitten and killed.
The genealogy in this book is hard to follow
So many names this is like a maze or puzzle to try to sort out
A family tree would be helpful
There really seems to be no structure to this story, it seems like a collection of events that have nothing to do with one another.
The beginning appears to be a creation story somewhat
Then it is followed by the king being killed by the snake
Then the son of the king promises a boon for the capture of the snake
I think this is a story of humans and gods but I am not sure this could be the story of god’s at war with one another because when the serpent is captured and held over the flame the serpent is called a god and Indra is also called there and defeated by they humans or rather left powerless to stop them because they were casting mantras?
Is this saying that the god’s are not more powerful than humans and that in some way the humans are somewhat equal to the god’s
The story also seems extremely obsessed with sex
The young girl is able to call upon any god she wants and that god will come down and have sex with her and she is guaranteed a child.
Children of the god’s are born in one day
She places the child in a basket and sends it down river and this seems a lot like the biblical story
The child is taken in by a couple that could not have children
100 babies taking two years to be born
Once they are born they are just a ball of flesh
The ball is separated into 101 pieces and placed in jars of butter
Two years later they are born.
100 boys and 1 girl
They girl that can call upon god’s to mate with her marries a king
That king kills two deer having sex and he is cursed to never again be able to have sex without dying
He has two wives and rather than leave him they live with him
He wants son’s and has his wife call upon the god’s to mate with her
She does and the other wife wants a child so she also calls upon the gods to do the same
The king sees her bathing and can’t resist her and as soon as he begins having sex with her he dies
She dies with him in her arms from a broken heart
Drona is turned away by the king because of his class
Drona teaches his children to be archers and warriors and they capture the king
Drona tells the king that he will be released for half his land and that Drona will become king of that land so that he and the king could be friends or enemies without regard to class
I don’t understand what the not eating in the dark thing was
The sons of Drona seem to be involved in some sort of competition
This story really needs to narrow in on a few characters and focus on their journeys as it is the story really bounces around making it hard to engage.

Reading Diary 5
The battle is different, everyone dies in this version, everyone dies, oh wait it was just a vision.
The Rakshaha are given more power in this version, they are not just overpowered like in the other version.
Again it is hunaman that is a key figure in this portion of the story.
The bear believes that if he dies the army dies.
Dharma is talked about.
Lakshmana's single battle is told in this version in greater detail.
In this version I wouldn't describe Ravana as evil so much as misguided.
Ravana and the old man is a story that I don't remember in the last version I read.
Suka is another character that is more detailed in this version.
Ravana's letter changes this story, and brings to the forefront the back story of Rama and reincarnation. Ravana becomes a very sympathetic character at this point.
Rama seems to accept Sita instantly in this version but there could be more.
Hunaman and Bharata, i did not know must have missed it in both versions but Rama had to return before Bharata killed himself.
When Rama returns he is greeted by Bharata which is described like a scene from the bible. the story or jesus washing the beggars feet.
The hunch back asks Sita for forgiveness. Still this part seems to go away from karma or Dharma because the hunch back is told that his betrayal of Rama was good because it freed the men and gods from Ravana. So the hunchback's actions were not negative?
The people are the ones that questions Sita and make Rama doubt her. So it s at this point that she is shunned. In the last versions he was shunned before this so once again same story but different ways of telling the story. Rama orders her to be abandoned.....I think the other version made more sense but once again Dharma is brought up.
The Rakshaha are given more power in this version, they are not just overpowered like in the other version.

Reading Diary A
Hunaman is a huge figure in this version of the story. In the previous version he played a major role also but in this version there he is even bigger.
The Search for Sita in this story is more in depth than the last story which I think is not needed. In this version Buck expands on the entire search, but I like the previous version better because the story is better served if Buck had focused only on Hunaman, instead of the rest of the search.
In both versions the monkeys spend time with the lady before Hunaman travels across the lake. I am not sure what this is supposed to represent, and not sure why this is here. I think both versions could have left this part out.
In this version Hunaman Jumps across the body of water, in the previous version he grew and stepped across the version, doesn't make that much of a difference but it is another way that Buck distinguishes his version. Seems to be room for a lot of interpretation in this story.
Sita in captivity is much the same as the last version, but one difference is that Sita only has one year to live.
The description of the city as Hunaman travels through it searching for Sita really brings the city alive.
Buck does a good job of giving us the inner thoughts of the characters which adds elements to this version that were glossed over in the first version and example of this is when Hunaman finds Sita. He whispers to her to get her attention. The story gives his inner thoughts which explains why he is whispering to her. In this version of the story characters actions seem thought out, and there is an awareness of the consequences of their actions, in the previous version it seemed like the characters just did things and then the consequences happened.
Another example of this is when Hunaman is captured and has his tail set on fire. He travels through the city and sets fire to it. In the previous version he just set fire to it and went across the water, but in this version he looks at the damage he had done and begins to realize that he may have hurt Sita and before he leaves goes to check on her, still if he has the power to grow and she trusts him and he is able to escape then why doesn't he just grab her on his way out and take her back to Rama. It would avoid the entire war. I doubt that Ravana would follow because by this point it is mainly pride that keeps him from returning her.

Reading Diary B
This story in Exile seems to be less in depth than the other version
The encounter with Ravana sister seems to be the same except in the other version she seems to try harder
As with the first version Rama kills all of Kara’s army, but in this version he cuts off Ravana’s sisters ear
The story of Ravana kidnapping sita seems pretty much the same, though the golden deer in this story differs because the deer feels it to be an honor and I did not get that impression from the last version
Does Ravana actually touch Sita in this version, I know in the last version he could not touch a woman with out her consent or else he will die, but it appears in this version that curse is not present.
The Hansel and Gretel type of trail in this version is more profound, and the monkey’s seemed to be as described as actual monkeys and not a hybrid as in the other version
The story of Vali and his brother is the same in this story
Vali’s wife seems to be more concerned about his battle in this story
In the last version, when Rama killed Vali it seemed almost cowardly and the author seemed to explain that away so that Rama could keep his virtue intact but in this version it just seems like an assassination and the last version did a better job describing the battle between Vali and his brother in this version I’m not even sure if there was a battle
Ravana so far is playing a bigger role in this story than he did in the previous version, he could almost be as big of a figure in this story as Rama.

Reading Diary A
This starts out different than the last version we read. There is a lot more background on the gods and the description is more in depth.
So they are calling him Rama in heaven, I thought that was his human name.
A lot more Ravana in this version, this is good because it shows that the gods were scared of him and why Rama took human form. The backstory to this version is really improtant.
On earth the events seem to fall into place with the last version. Rama's father sends him with the sage.
Some of the dialouge at the point is exactly the same.
What happened to the Mother Demon and her two son's.
There is a lot more of the back and forth in the story telling, it is almost as if Rama is kind of a secondary character because the story seems to be more concerned with the exploits of others. Obviously Rama is not a secondary character but it reminds me of the stories of Arthur because though Arthur's presence is felt he is very sparringly used.
The Sita and Rama love story is told better in this version, even the story of Rama breaking the bow is clearer, in the last version they kept mentioning rama breaking the bow but when I first read it i did not get that image, I had to read it a number of times. In this version the bow breaking came across the first read.
This version of the kings choosing a successor is basically the same. Though it seems like there is less outcry for Rama when he leaves, by that I mean that the guards try to stop him but it is just because they are commanded to do so. Still much more information than the other version.
I think this version is more of a novel and the other version is more of an attempt to carry on the Oral story telling tradition.

Reading Diary B week 1
Lakshmana is extremely loyal to Rama, though they are only half brothers
everyone keeps offering to kill themselves
the passage reminds me of jesus somewhat being tossed into the wilderness and being tempted to sin by satan.
mutilation of women that are not completely pure of heart.
Sita being stolen is another example of Gods acting like humans, though the gods seem to be prone to reacting to the extremes of their emotions, there is no middle ground they are either totally in love or they hate and want death. This could be the stories way of saying that it is better to be level headed and and do what your mind says to do rather than what your heart tells you. Another example of this is when Ramas father makes him leave.

Reading Diary Week 1
the king seems to be a kind ruler
the king seems to fear the sage, maybe because the sage although not the ruler is more powerful politically than the king
love was murdered? The god of love was killed by shiva another god for ruining his meditation, but was he killed or just turned to ash?
the desert acts as a mirror to the human soul or rather the effects that negative energy can have on a human beings soul. If a person is filled with hate and anger then their soul eventually becomes a desert, a place that no seed can take root and sprout. Basically if you have hate in your heart then there is no place for love to grow.
A woman in this society would be valued as a woman only as long as she remained pure, but once she was no longer pure (not sexually but pure hearted) she loses her womanhood.
The gods in this story seem to share the same plaine as the humans, though they have powers that are clearly supernatural, they are still mortal.
Rama is unknowingly vinsu, one of the three most important hindu gods.
The Ganga's Story shows an awareness that long after a person has passed on their presence on earth can still be seen, that everything we do gives us a sort of immortality.
Indra and ahalya sounds much like Zeus taking Hercules mother and almost the same as uther pendragon sleeping with Arthurs mother.
The task of stringing the bow is almost exactly like the story in the odessey.
lakshmana sounds like an authurian knight, much like the knights in the lancelot chronicles or any of the original authurian legends.
rama is available almost a jesus figure to the people...which makes sense because he is the savior god in hindu beliefs
This is much like the story of the fall....the woman is to blame for it all...she is made out to be evil when in reality she too has been tricked but a hunch back which in those timea I imagine would represent some kind of less than human thing...she did this out of fear of what rama would do if he were to become king...she truly loves him but is scared of her fate..this is much like Christianity because it takes complete faith and her is an example of what can happen when a person loses faith...ramas banishment is a punishment much like jesus's crucifixion. ...it is happening because of a fear of loss of power.
Rama leaving the city reminds me of the moses story.
